Що таке EVM? Огляд віртуальної машини Ethereum та ключові аспекти екосистеми Web3

2026-01-05 16:44

The Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is the core of the Ethereum protocol—a global, decentralized computing engine designed specifically to execute smart contracts.

Think of it as a virtual supercomputer maintained by tens of thousands of nodes worldwide. This collective infrastructure ensures that code runs precisely and trustlessly according to preset rules on Ethereum and EVM-compatible blockchains.

01 Technical Core: How the EVM Powers the Blockchain

At its heart, the EVM is a stack-based, quasi-Turing-complete state machine. This definition highlights three key aspects.

First, being "stack-based" means all computational instructions and temporary data are organized and processed using a last-in, first-out stack structure. This architecture lays the foundation for deterministic execution.

Second, "quasi-Turing-complete" indicates the EVM can, in theory, perform any computational task. However, the Gas mechanism imposes a computational limit to prevent infinite loops or malicious code from draining network resources, elegantly solving the "halting problem."

Finally, as a "state machine," the EVM manages Ethereum’s global state. This state encompasses the balances, storage data, and contract code for all accounts—including both regular user accounts and contract accounts.

Every time a transaction is executed, the EVM reads the current state, processes computations based on the transaction instructions, and produces a new, deterministic state that all network nodes update in sync.

02 Execution Flow: From Code to On-Chain Action

A smart contract’s journey on the EVM—from deployment to execution—follows a standardized process. It begins with developers writing contract logic in high-level languages like Solidity or Vyper.

The code is then compiled into EVM bytecode, a low-level sequence of opcodes the EVM can interpret directly.

When a contract is deployed on-chain, this bytecode is permanently stored at a specific contract address.

Each time a user interacts with a contract—such as swapping tokens or staking assets on Gate—it triggers EVM execution.

Your wallet initiates a transaction, specifying the required Gas limit and Gas price. The EVM then reads and executes the contract’s bytecode opcode by opcode (such as arithmetic operations like ADD and MUL, or state storage commands like SSTORE), with each step consuming a specific amount of Gas.

If execution completes successfully, state changes (like token transfers) take effect. If Gas runs out mid-execution, the process is rolled back, but the Gas spent is not refunded—an effective safeguard against network abuse.

03 Ecosystem Expansion: The Universe of EVM-Compatible Chains Beyond Ethereum

The EVM’s design has been so successful that its standards have extended far beyond Ethereum, giving rise to a vast ecosystem of "EVM-compatible chains."

Blockchains such as BNB Smart Chain, Polygon, Avalanche, TRON, and others have chosen to fully or partially implement the EVM specification.

This means smart contracts and DApps originally developed for Ethereum can be deployed on these chains with minimal adaptation—or sometimes none at all.

Such compatibility generates powerful network effects. It dramatically lowers the barriers for developers to migrate or build cross-chain applications, allowing liquidity, users, and assets to move more freely across multiple blockchains.

This also explains why many mainstream crypto assets exist within the EVM ecosystem. Below is an overview of key EVM-related tokens and their latest prices on Gate (data as of January 5, 2026):

Token Name Core Association & Role Latest Price on Gate (Approx.)
Ethereum (ETH) The birthplace of the EVM and its native asset; the primary currency for paying Gas fees. Please refer to Gate’s real-time market page
BNB (BNB) The native Gas token of BNB Smart Chain (BSC), a major EVM-compatible chain. Please refer to Gate’s real-time market page
MATIC (Polygon) Polygon is an Ethereum scaling solution with EVM-compatible sidechains. Please refer to Gate’s real-time market page
TRON (TRX) TRON network has achieved EVM compatibility, which is key to its ecosystem growth. $0.2943
Avalanche (AVAX) Avalanche C-Chain is a fully EVM-compatible mainnet. Please refer to Gate’s real-time market page

These price trends reflect the vibrancy and attention within the broader EVM ecosystem. For investors, knowing whether a project is EVM-based is a vital factor in assessing its technical maturity, developer accessibility, and ecosystem connectivity.

04 Current Challenges: EVM’s Scalability Bottleneck

Despite the EVM ecosystem’s growth, its original design faces real-world challenges—most notably, scalability limitations.

As the first EVM implementation, Ethereum’s mainnet is constrained by its sequential transaction processing model and limited block space. During periods of network congestion, Gas fees can spike and transaction confirmations slow down.

This directly impacts user experience and limits the development of DApps that require high-frequency, low-cost transactions, such as GameFi and micropayments.

To overcome these bottlenecks, the community has proposed multilayered solutions.

Layer 2 scaling solutions (like Optimistic Rollups and ZK-Rollups) bundle large numbers of transactions off-chain, submitting proofs to Ethereum mainnet for settlement. This approach offloads computational demand from the EVM.

Meanwhile, new high-performance EVM-compatible chains (such as Monad) are innovating at the Layer 1 level, introducing parallel execution, improved consensus mechanisms, and other advanced technologies to achieve ultra-high throughput—targeting tens of thousands of transactions per second (TPS).

05 Future Evolution: Ongoing Upgrades and a Broader Blueprint

The EVM continues to evolve. Ethereum’s core development team is actively optimizing its performance.

According to the roadmap, Ethereum is set for a major upgrade called Glamsterdam in 2026. This upgrade is expected to introduce parallel processing and higher Gas limits, potentially boosting network throughput to around 10,000 transactions per second.

Modular blockchain architecture is another significant trend. In the future, blockchains may separate consensus, data availability, settlement, and execution into distinct layers. The EVM is poised to evolve into a highly specialized "execution layer," focused on running smart contracts efficiently and flexibly, while other layers provide security and data guarantees.

From a broader perspective, the EVM’s role as a standardized computational environment may inspire wider adoption of its core principles. By ensuring deterministic execution and state consistency for decentralized applications, the EVM lays the groundwork for a trustworthy digital economy.

Conclusion

For global trading platforms like Gate, a thriving EVM ecosystem means a diverse range of assets and trading opportunities. Understanding the EVM is not just about grasping a core technology—it’s about comprehending the operational logic behind today’s most innovative blockchain applications. As scaling technologies mature and cross-chain interoperability improves, a more efficient, interconnected multi-chain world powered by the EVM is rapidly becoming a reality.
